The Seattle Instances editorial board desires our authorities to advertise “sustainable” aviation fuels [“Pass sustainable aviation fuels bill to combat climate crisis,” March 30, Opinion.]
It then lists sources of those “sustainable” fuels, probably the most predominant of which is corn grain. Corn grain is produced by diverting farmland from meals manufacturing to gas manufacturing. Diverting farmland from meals manufacturing will increase the necessity for extra farmland. This want is met by deforestation in both the U.S. or in different nations. Additionally, the manufacturing of corn grain requires fertilizer, which ends up in greenhouse fuel emission throughout each making and utilizing the fertilizer.
Using any so-called “sustainable” gas shouldn’t be promoted if the manufacturing of that gas entails the diversion of farmland from meals manufacturing.
