Shortly after that first contract was signed, Toliver made contact with somebody in Travis Scott’s circle. He’d been a fan of Travis’s music for some time; the deal he would quickly signal with Cactus Jack formalized a relationship that Toliver characterizes as very important to his private {and professional} growth. It was below Travis’s wing that Toliver was launched to the general public at massive, on Astroworld’s “Can’t Say.” His first two albums, Heaven or Hell and Lifetime of a Don, have been launched in 2020 and ‘21, respectively, every charting properly and spawning modest hits (“After Get together,” “What You Want”).
“Being round any individual like that can make you need to be the perfect particular person you’ll be able to probably be,” Toliver says of Travis. “He motivated me to be the perfect model of myself.” In truth, of their collaborations, Travis even appears to nudge his model towards his protege’s; on Lifetime of a Don’s “Flocky Flocky,” Travis’s second verse incorporates a lilt and bounce which can be Toliver logos. He’s influencing his influences.
Now Toliver is on the middle of the scene, fluent within the language of the second—the favored themes, flows, beats—whereas scrambling his supply to sound as contemporary and pressing as ever. As the most important stars of the earlier period have acknowledged, Toliver is reimagining what’s proper in entrance of us, seeing issues that no person else might. And when he has the chance to share that imaginative and prescient, he is aware of what to do: assault, assault, assault.
